Congenital Cardiac Disease
Congenital heart disease in cairns is a malformation of the heart or great vessels. The lesions characterizing congenital heart defects are present at birth and may develop more fully during perinatal and growth periods. Many congenital heart defects are thought to be genetically transmitted from parents to offspring.
OFA heart clearances are available to cairn terriers who pass an examination by a Veterinary cardiologists (defined as licensed veterinarians with diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) cardiology sub-specialty). These examinations need to be repeated on a yearly basis as heart disease may not become apparent until later in the dog's life.
