WHY DO WELL-BRED DOGS COST SO MUCH?

BECAUSE WHEN DONE RIGHT DOG BREEDING IS EXPENSIVE!

You are interested in a very special thing - a world-class purebred dog from an ethical, decades long experienced breeder. You could get a dog off Craig's List or from a "big-name" puppy mill, but there are dire consequences for all dogs when this is done.  Understand: dogs are wonderful, magical creatures no matter how they are bred, their heart and soul shine through no matter how humble their origins...

But you truly love dogs want the best for all dogs, and you understand the only way to stop the terrible fate of shelter/rescue dogs is to NOT support the people whose dogs end up in shelters/rescues. Puppies are sold on a supply and demand basis, and as long as there are people who demand cheap, poorly bred puppies, there will be people willing to supply them.  This encourages the exploitation of our best friends to produce pups for profit by people not willing to put a cent back to help the breed.

There is a reason that purebred dog breeding has traditionally been a hobby of the rich - It takes money! To be brutally honest, an ethical breeder will not make money breeding dogs for the simple reason they put the money back into the dogs. True breeders love their breed(s) and strive constantly to improve health and character. To do this they purchase expensive foundation dogs, pay large stud fees, spend thousands each year on health testing and constantly strive to feed and house their dogs in the best way possible.  All of this takes a lot of money. It is truly an (expensive) labor of love for ethical breeders.

Why do I charge more for foundation quality pups?  To be honest, its to discourage all but the most serious
breeders from buying a pup with the idea of breeding.  Far too many people think they will have "just one litter"
for one reason or another, and inevitably, these well intentioned folks are the ones who fail to health test, nor are they in a position to take back pups or older dogs that cannot be kept. My motto is "leave breeding to breeders".

Two Prices - WHY?

Foundation Quality: This term indicates that the puppy being sold has the potential to develop into an above average specimen due to its genetics, structure, character and health clearances.  This puppy may well develop into an animal upon which a breeding program can be founded.

Limited AKC Registration: This price is for ANY pup being sold without breeding rights.  This pup can be a "Foundation Quality" pup, and the buyer simply has no interest in breeding so the price is reduced.  Due to my strict quality standards, an otherwise perfect pup will only be sold as "Limited" if it has DNA results which, while NOT causing the dog any harm, should be removed from the breed's genetic pool. Example would be carriers of diseases such as "CMO" in cairns or "vwD" in Dobermans.  Carriers do not HAVE the disease, but can pass it on if bred. These diseases STOP HERE - its that simple (and I wish other breeders would do this!)

Each puppy buyer can chose the price they wish.  If they want a pup graded "Foundation Quality" but don't want breeding rights, they will pay the "Limited" price.
Dobermans*

Older Pups and Adult Dogs

Occasionally I will have an older pup (3 months to 12 months) available.  These older pups are often available at a reduced price. Because I am not a commercial breeder, and breed for myself as a hobby, sometimes I "grow out" a few pups when I can't decide which one to retain for my breeding program. These are not "culls" but rather high quality pups that I held back to see how they developed. I just can't keep them all!

Very occasionally I will have an adult dog available.  Because I have a "take back clause" on ALL my puppies, they always come home to DanBar Ranch if their owners can no longer keep them. This is why my dogs never end up in shelters/rescues.  If you are interested in one of these dogs CLICK HERE.

* Doberman Costs: You will sometimes see ridiculous prices for Doberman pups, 4, 5, 6 thousand dollars for a pup with less health testing done on the parent's than I do! Don't be conned... because European Dobermans are a bit of a fad right now there are MANY "greeders" out there trying to cash in quickly. They know that by having very high prices some types of people will feel they are really getting something "special".  Sadly, in most cases, they are getting puppies from European puppy mill lines like Pride of Russia, Betelges, Altobella and others who have dogs riddled with DCM. These folks with the fancy prices won't be able to show you their dog's OFA/DNA results on the OFA site and will make up all kinds of excuses why they don't need to. I want to make well-bred Dobermans within reach of the average family.  My whole life has been a celebration of the pure-bred dog and I want others to know that joy.
